GUYYYYSSSS!!! Tell me that’s not the creepiest thing you’ve ever watched!! Yet for some reason, I’d watch it again. I am a sucker for scary movies! If you’re a fan of horror movies like me, you’re going to love what I have in store for you today. Alright guys, lets jump into the scary stuff. Today I’m going to tell you the Top 10 Scary Movies That You Shouldn’t Watch Alone!… and I’m being serious…. Don’t do it!
Starting at number 10 we have a one-of-a-kind classic scary movies, Hush. The movie came out in 2016 and was directed by Mike Flanagan (who is well known for his Netflix horror The Haunting of Hill House). This movie is one-of-a-kind because it’s the first movie that is a home invasion thriller, where a deaf woman (Kate Siegel, flanagans wife) faces off against a masked murderer. Intense right? The audience immediately gets immersed into the film by Kate’s sound-free existence.
It creates a uniquely tense scary movies that finds a different spin on the typical “house invasion” type premise. Imagine how hard it would be to escape a home invasion without being able to hear where your killer is. Not only that, but no sound at all, including the 911 call you’d probably be trying to make. It’s one of the small scary movies that’s perfect for viewing on your laptop when tucked in bed, but it will have you checking the locks on your doors. It will also make you extremely grateful for your own hearing abilities! Above all, it might make you think twice about leaving your headphones on when you head down to the fridge to make yourself a midnight snack.
9) The Strangers
The 9th scary movies you will not want to watch alone is The Strangers. This horror flick came out in 2008 and still haunts me to this day. There is nothing more terrifying than masked intruders, because they usually arrive with some type of sharp object and they always mean business. Not a business most people want to be involved with either…. In this movie, Scott Speedman and Liv Tylerstar as two lovers on the road to a romantic getaway, cute right? That doesn’t last long.
Things get ugly after a failed proposal, and also when strangers show up with creepy doll masks on their faces. Tell me that’s not creepy?! A trio of psychos crashes their getaway ready to slice and dice the surprised couple; probably not the best rental choice for their little vacation. What makes this home flick so effective is how generally rooted it is in reality, just about anyone could have their holiday home broken into, and there’s not much you can do about it. Just try watching it alone…. you’ll spend more time watching out the window.
8) Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Sitting at number 8 is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The original movie to this classic scary movie was made in 1974. Although there have been remakes of it and nothing beats the original masterpiece. The legendary story is about two siblings and three of their friends who are en route to visit their grandfather’s grave in Texas, and end up falling victim to a family of cannibalistic psychopaths. Yes, you heard that right….cannibalistic. I’ll give you a moment to just imagine what I mean by that. Yeah….it’s THAT bad.
Normally I’m not a fan of older scary movies but the rough production value of this one only contributes more to the grimy style and tone of the plot. It did not restrain anything when it comes to the violence and gore of the film. The death scenes are incredibly minimalist and have a sort of detached feel to them which actually makes them even more unsettling. If you’ve ever driven down a country lane late at night, you’ll probably be able to relate to the movie’s off-putting remote location, and you’ll probably never want to drive down one again.
Alright taking the lucky #7 spot is Sinister, an incredibly scary movie that came out in 2012. This one has a chilling spin on supernatural events that other scary movies have explored. It follows the story of a true-crime writer named Ellison Oswald. He’s in a slump with his writing….. meaning he hasn’t had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers film tapes showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery, and make a bestselling hit out of it. He goes as far as moving his own family into the victims’ home and gets to work.
However, when an old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, he learns that moving into that house may have cost everyone their lives. God that’s terrifying…Things from the tapes start to become real, leaving the audience with a heart-pounding intense ending. I think it’s fair to say that Sinister is NOT a movie to watch if you’ve just recently moved houses.
6) Paranormal Activity
Falling into number 6 is a very popular film sequence that originally started in 2007: Paranormal Activity. This found footage flick made audiences wet their pants and blame loved ones for spilling soda in the theater. I can shamefully say after watching this scary movies, I became completely paranoid any time I heard a sound or saw something move. If you haven’t heard about this horrifying film, it’s about a couple, Katie and Micah, who move into a new San Diego home. They begin to notice weird things happening around the house which inspires them to set up cameras. Naturally. Then they can then see what truly goes on when they go bed at night. And after they do, they wish they never did. Yeah, you’re not going to want to sleep after you watch this scary movies. The thought of even closing your eyes will horrify you. Good luck!
5) The Blair Witch Project
Another found footage nightmare that you’ll never want to watch alone is The Blair Witch Project. The original movie came out in 1999, and still haunts its audience to this day. I used to love camping and hiking, until I saw this scary movie and was just one of the millions that were convinced this footage was in fact real, and that the three actors themselves were actually still missing. I can blame their viral marketing campaign for that. It is one of the most successful Indie films of all time.
It follows the story of three filmmakers venturing through the Burkittsville woods in search to uncover a legendary myth. Although they blew the cover of the tapes being real and the frightening ending has since become iconic and still makes you believe that anything is possible when it comes to the supernatural. By the end of it, I didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t. And if you’re wondering… yes, I still get scared while camping. Watch the movie and you will to.
4) The Conjuring
Falling into the #4 spot is The Conjuring. The brutally terrifying scary movie that came out in 2013. The movie follows real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed, who are summoned to a farmhouse where a supernatural presence has made itself known. You know that you probably picked the wrong home to move into when your dog mysteriously dies during your first few days and spirits begin to express a desire to end your life. But the paranormal isn’t the usual ghost, but is in fact the spirit from an evil doll, named Annabelle. Tell me you won’t throw away every doll you’ve ever had after seeing that. After the regular drill of exorcisms, it left people completely paranoid of dolls. And by people, I mean me.
3) The Grudge
Speaking of paranoid, another scary movie that will leave you in distress is The Grudge. The famous movie that came out in 2004 and had me and all my girlfriends crying at sleepovers because we dared ourselves to watch it. True story. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays an American nurse who moves to work in Tokyo. Following a series of horrifying and mysterious deaths, she encounters a supernatural spirit that possesses its victims, claims their souls and then passes its curse to another person in a spreading chain of horror.
You join her on her journey as she tries to find a way to either break the supernatural spell or become its next victim. Some of the graphics in this movie are the scariest one’s I’ve personally ever seen. I swear to you that image has haunted me since I was in elementary school. It does not get easier over time. I do NOT recommend watching this one alone!!
2) The Ring
Another one that’s haunted me since my childhood is the classic 2002 film The Ring. Another terrifying experience that I thought I could handle. Four words: Samara and the television. This remake of a 1998 Japanese film left an imprint on everyone who watched. Naomi Watts stars as a protective mother who attempts to break the cycle of death by solving a murder case to try and save everybody from lonely VHS deaths.
Basically, everyone who watches this Japanese mystery video tape.. dies. As a result, seeing as we all watch it while watching the movie, you can’t help but feel like you’re next. This movie was also responsible for inspiring movie lovers to call their best friends and whisper, “7 days,” into the phone, which would completely ruin their Friday night plans. This phone call signifies the phone call people receive in the movie 7 days before their death. As a result, anyone who watches the tape receives this call. After watching this movie you’ll think twice about answering your next call.
1) The Exorcist
Taking first place from all the others is The Exorcist. The classic horror film that your parents refused to let you watch, and for good reason. The original 1973 movie is legendary known for its absolutely terrifying imagery. Does a spinning demon-possessed head qualify for that? With a historical backstory of religion, the story follows an aging priest trying to defeat a supernatural enemy. The mortifying exorcism was loosely base don actual events.
It wasn’t just unbelievably scary, The Exorcist was actually nominated for 10 Academy Awards.. and after watching it, you’ll see why. When the young character Regan starts acting odd and the family and priest begin to realize how serious this is. And by odd I mean levitating, twitching, speaking in tongues… all the creepy vibes you could think of. In conclusion, No matter what your religious beliefs are but this one will leave you with nothing but sleepless nights.
Thanks for reading the article! and remember, do NOT watch these movies alone!!
